I want to show you a really quick and easy tip on how to get a fun, simple finish to your paintings. This works especially well if you’re painting on a wood board… but you can absolutely do this on canvas too.

What Is a Vignette Border?

A vignette is just a soft edge around your painting. It’s not a hard line or a frame. It just kind of fades in from the edges and gives your painting that finished look.

What You’ll Need

You don’t need anything complicated for this:

You can also use other colors like gold or white depending on the look you want.

Step 1: Paint the Edges

Start by painting the sides or edges of your canvas or wood board. This helps define the outside of your painting and gives you something to pull from in the next step.

Step 2: Pull the Paint Onto the Front

This is the most important part. Once your edges are painted, you’re going to take your brush and just pull that paint slightly onto the front of your painting. Not a lot! Just a little.

Just kind of drag it around the edge. And that’s what creates that soft vignette effect.

Step 3: Keep It Soft and Natural

You don’t want this to look perfect. Let it be a little uneven. Some areas can be darker, some lighter. That’s what makes it feel more natural and gives it that soft, blended look instead of a harsh border.

Step 4: Let It Finish the Painting

Once you’ve gone all the way around, step back and take a look. You’ll notice how it just kind of frames your painting, draws your eye inward, and makes everything feel more finished. And it really doesn’t take much.

Try It with Different Colors

You don’t have to stick with black. You can do this with gold for a softer glow, white for a lighter edge, or any color already in your painting.

It’s just a simple way to create a little vignette border and finish off your edges.
